FUMAGALLI, Julieta; WILSON, Maximiliano  e  JAICHENCO, Virginia. Spanish-speaking readers and pre-readers' sensitivity to phonological information. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2010, vol.2, n.1, pp. 68-77. ISSN 2075-9479.

The aim of this study is to examine pre-readers, initial readers and literate children´s sensitivity to phonological units: syllables, phonemes, rimes and onsets. This study also investigates whether the position of the unit is relevant for its recognition. Participants were 145 children from preschool (four and five year-old children), first, third and sixth grade of primary education. Results show differences in performance between units and groups. Also, an increasing sensitivity to all phonological units has been found, with final phonemes and onsets being the most difficult to process. Taken together, these results highlight the sensitivity to phonological information before the formal literacy. These quantitative (score) and qualitative (position and type of sublexical unit) differences tend to diminish with literacy and training.
