Abstract

SQUILLACE, Mario; JANEIRO, Jimena Picón  and  SCHMIDT, Vanina. The concept of impulsivity and its location in psychobiological theories of personality. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2011, vol.3, n.1, pp. 8-18. ISSN 2075-9479.

In recent years, impulsivity has been the subject of countless works in psychology. Researchers often work on different ideas about what is impulsivity. These different conceptualizations are not always made explicit. This article reviews the main conceptions of impulsivity arising from the psychology of personality. Models based on factor analysis are reviewed as well as those built from psychobiology. It is concluded that impulsivity is a multidimensional concept. For this reason, we must speak of different types of impulsivity rather than referring to a unitary construct.

Keywords : Impulsivity; Personality; Biopsychology; Sensation seeking.
