SANCHEZ MIGUEL, Emilio; GARCIA RODICIO, Héctor  y  MARCOS SANCHEZ, Mercedes. "We could think that... but.": The "revision" as discursive operation that promotes control processes during reading. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2012, vol.4, n.spe, pp. 104-114. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2012.0099.

Rhetorical devices guide reader in the execution of cognitive processes required to understand a text. We will use the term "revision" to refer to a textual device that holds the control processes of text comprehension and that has been not much studied. Our objective was to define its nature, distinguishing it from other similar resources better investigated, and to assess their impact on text comprehension through three experiments. In experiment 1, 65 students were assessed with texts in three different conditions: with text revisions, cues and clarification. In experiment 2, 45 students were assessed with the same materials as in Experiment 1, but in this case reading times of the clarifications were measured. In Experiment 3, 51 students were assessed with the same materials as in Experiment 1 using thinking aloud technique. This device has specific characteristics that distinguish it from others, much more studied. Moreover, the results of our experiments show that revision improves text comprehension because it helps readers to notice errors in their interpretation of what they read and to take appropriate measures to repair them.
