Abstract

CORSO, Helena Vellinho; SPERB, Tania Mara  and  SALLES, Jerusa Fumagalli de. Development of a reading comprehension instrument from retelling and questionnaire. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2012, vol.4, n.2, pp. 22-32. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2012.0080.

This study aims to describe the process of constructing a reading comprehension assessment instrument, by means of retelling and questionnaire tasks. The assessment relies on discourse processing and reading comprehension models of Kintsch and Van Dijk (1978), Kintsch (1988, 1998) and Trabasso (Trabasso, van den Broek, & Suh, 1989, Suh & Trabasso, 1993). The specific objectives included to conduct text selection, analysis and operationalization of the variables from the analysis. We review the instruments usually used to assess comprehension as well as models that underlie to the construction of such instruments. We also discuss some aspects to be considered in the process of developing a test for reading comprehension as well as their scoring/interpretation. Completeness and coherence of participant's retelling - aspects of reading comprehension highlighted in the models - were the criteria conferring the protocols to five different categories. Six protocols, presented to illustrate the method of retelling evaluation, show the variability of results that the instrument can reveal. The accuracy of the results makes the evaluation of comprehension reliable through the instrument, and it indicates its applicability in research and clinical practice.
