KLUWE-SCHIAVON, Bruno; VIOLA, Thiago Wendt  e  GRASSI-OLIVEIRA, Rodrigo. Theoretical models about single or multiple processes of executive functions. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2012, vol.4, n.2, pp. 29-34. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2012.00106.

The Executive Functions (EF) are considered high-level complexity cognitive activities, which contributes to a quite controversial theoretical construct in the scientific literature. Some authors suggest that EF are formed by different processes, related and independent. However, other authors assume that they constitute a single skill that encompasses all the elements - planning, cognitive flexibility, focused and sustained attention, emotional processing, behavioral inhibition, decision making, self-monitoring - an integrator system that supports executive functioning directed to a goal. Thus, two different theoretical approaches can be observed regarding EF: Models of Multiple Process and Models of Single Construct. The objective of this study was to review the main theoretical models of the EF in light of these distinct constructs, briefly presenting the main concepts and theoretical references for each model.
