Abstract

CORDOVA, Eduadro Alejandro Escotto. To be + gerund: verbal paradigm on the recovery of aphasia. A Case Study. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2013, vol.5, n.spe, pp. 22-27. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2013.0114.

We report a 25-year-old man with afferent motor aphasia who was capable to express with easiness sentences that contained periphrasis with the verb to-be plus gerund. Aphasia was assessed with the Puebla-Sevilla neuropsychological test, followed by a intervening protocol based on the phonological analysis of words, (syllabic analysis, pronunciation of word phonemes, and spelling), writing words and phrases, automatic pronunciation of series (weekdays, months, numbers 1 to 50, and alphabet), image-based generation of sentences, and on the production of sentences with the help of verb-cards. During the intervening process the patient produced multiple sentences on the 'to be' verb + gerund paradigm, but had many difficulties in trying to produce sentences with the same conjugate verbs in the present, past or future tense. We conclude that the role that such periphrasis has in Spanish language may become a helping structure for sentence-generation in efferent motor aphasic patients.
