Abstract

UEHARA, Emmy; CHARCHAT-FICHMAN, Helenice  and  LANDEIRA-FERNANDEZ, Jesus. Executive functions?: An integrative portrait of the main models and theories of this concept. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2013, vol.5, n.3, pp. 25-37. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2013.145.

Since the emergence of the term "executive functions" (EF), many studies were performed in order to better understand their theoretical aspects, improve the tools used in their assessment as well as its development path. The issue has aroused much interest both researchers and clinicians, who have developed various explanatory models. Thus, this study aims to emphasize differences in the definition of EF, review and point out the major theories and models in addition to classical approaches that influenced the definition of EF. By categorizing and grouping the topics and the authors, were originated four explanatory approaches of these models: cognitive, neuropsychological, psychometric and developmental.

Keywords : Neuroscience; Neuropsychology; Executive functions; Frontal lobe.
