Abstract

LOPEZ, Marcela C.; AGUILAR, María J.; HERMIDA, Mariana  and  ZABALA, María L.. Mnesic recovery processes in women with Turner's Syndrome. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2014, vol.6, n.2, pp. 1-6. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2014.0156.

Models of double process of recognition memory consider familiarity and recollection as independent mechanisms, underlying distinctive cerebral substrates. Turner´s Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder which express an atypical cerebral morphology affecting cortical and subcortical areas overlapping neural substrates involved in the recollection mechanism, hypocampic and para-hypocampic zones. The aim of this work was to analyze recollection and familiarity mechanisms in women with Turner´s Syndrome, in order to determine if a differential profile associated therewith exists. The investigation developed through a retrospective ex post facto design with two groups, in an intentional sample of women with turner´s Syndrome and its respective controls. To asses both processes differentially, an experimental font recognition test was administered, inside the paradigm of dissociation of processes, which implies the recognition of an stimuli itself in addition to the context elements where it was shown. The analysis of the results indicates significant differences between the clinical sample and its controls in the recollection process (p=.002), finding no differences in the familiarity process. (p=.281). Inside the variables involved in recognition memory, the higher differences are found in omissions in exclusion (p=.002) and exclusion mistakes (p=.016). Also, the magnitude of the difference for the variables that show significant results is high. These findings enrich the discussion towards the neuroanatomic models of recognition memory, considering that possible damage of the hippocampus and the underlying structures would affect recollection specifically. Determining the differential contribution of both processes to the recognition memory in women with Turner´s Syndrome would allow the design of interventions tending to potentiate mnesic strategies that optimize the global performance of recovery process.
