The aim of the present study is the assessment of two groups of Argentinian, native Spanish speaking children: one group formed by children diagnosed with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), and the other one formed by children with typical language development with tests that will evidence significant discrimination between the two groups. This study pretends to observe the relationship between memory and language within the clinic pediatric environment. Methods: sixteen school-age children were included in this study, all of them residing in Buenos Aires city. The mean age was 6 years and 6 months (6,5) and all Argentinians native Spanish speakers. Eight of the 16 children were diagnosed with SLI, and other 8 children had typical language development. Formal language tests, speech recording samples, executive cognitive performance tests and memory tests were supplied to all the children. A Mann Whitney - Pearson Chi Square test was used for data analysis. Results: the difference in the results between word memory tests, non-words repetition tasks and recalling sentences tasks were statistically significant. This means that the applied tests contain a great discrimination power. Conclusions: this study provides information about the worth of a memory performance ratio and a language performance ratio as categorization markers, highlighting the Work Memory as a possible originating factor of SLI. Clinical implications will be discuss and suggestions for investigation continuance of language and memory in context will be given.
