RIMOLDI, María F. et al. Programs for families of people after traumatic brain injury or stroke. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2015, vol.7, n.1, pp. 12-23. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2015.0228.

The neurological injuries, such as stroke or traumatic brain injury, is a major problem in Argentina and worldwide public health. As far as they generate a significant burden of disease, disability and premature death these disorders are in general devastating not only for their own life, but also for their families and caregivers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of existing psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic intervention programs for families of people who had suffered a traumatic brain injury or a stroke. For this, a systematic review of the scientific literature in which seven articles were selected as units of analysis, based on search in English literature databases PubMed and EBSCO. The results of these studies agree that the provision of programs for families with multidisciplinary and group information, education and practical skills development sessions, support and develop strategies sessions to solve problems, prepare the caregiver to a better performance of the new role. This kind of intervention improves the overall quality of patient care and allows a reduction in levels of depression, stress and caregiver burden, a decrease in the institutionalization of patients and optimization of clinical and behavioral outcomes of treatment, stimulating the active participation of the family in the rehabilitation process. The present review contributes to think about strategies and intervention methods that take into account an integrated approach to individual and family issues in rehabilitation, allowing the prevention of negative consequences, with no exclusive focus on the patient and on his/her impairments.
