MARENGO, Leonardo et al. Gamer or Addict?: A narrative review of the psychological aspects of video games addiction. Neuropsicologia Latinoamericana [online]. 2015, vol.7, n.3, pp. 1-12. ISSN 2075-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5579/rnl.2015.0266.

Introduction: A mid-twentieth century, with the emergence of the personal computer, the use of video games began to be considered as a potential tool for cognitive training, increasing the functionality of a wide range of attentional, perceptual and executive domains. Recently, video games have generated controversy in the global scientific community. Several studies reported that overuse of video games can cause addiction. Objective: The current narrative review aims to relieve scientific literature on the psychological aspects involved in addiction to video games. Results: The pathological use of video games has similar characteristics, but also distinct from other addictions. The main neuropsychological alterations observed in individuals addicted to video games are reflected in inhibitory control and decision making. Specific diagnostic criteria are not fully defined for the video game, especially for being still controversial among researchers. Discussion: A clear definition of these diagnostic criteria is critical to the advancement of research in the area. In this sense, neuroimaging studies lack methodological rigor by using small samples. Finally, research in neuropsychology may help clarify the cognitive deficits present in these individuals.
