This paper presents the main findings of a study on informal settlements in Bogota city. By using the phenomenological approach this study analyzed the construction of an identity through the building of a house in informal settlers. It was concluded that there are some identity components that can be analyzed by the symbols embedded in people's homes. On this paper it is also argued that it is important to rethinking urban management policies, they should be based on people's own understanding about the phenomena that make up a social reality.
