RODRIGUEZ ZABALA, David. Advanced Chronic Disease, Psychological Suffering and the General Healthcare Security System. rev. psicol. univ. antioquia [online]. 2013, vol.5, n.1, pp. 75-92. ISSN 2145-4892.

Chronic diseases produce a rupture in quotidian life and imply fundamental changes at the individual, social and family levels. This study looks into the meaning given by patients to the response of the General Healthcare Security System regarding their demand of health services. The qualitative methodology allowed the comprehension of the dynamics and meanings of the links arising from the interaction between patients and the healthcare system. In order to endure the consequences derived from diseases, it is necessary to rely on support networks, being the Healthcare System the first instance. The findings of the present study reveal the psychological suffering associated to chronic diseases, given the inadequate attention of the General Healthcare Security System.

Keywords : Chronic Disease; Family and Social Support Network; Healthcare System; Subjectivity; Psychological Suffering.
