Abstract

MOREIRA, Virginia; MACIEL, Regina Heloisa  and  ARAUJO, Thalita Queiroz de. Depression: the meanings of work. Rev. NUFEN [online]. 2013, vol.5, n.1, pp. 45-56. ISSN 2175-2591.

Abstract A cross-cultural phenomenological research took place in Chile, Brazil and the United States about the lived experience of depression, in which work was one of the emerging themes in the three countries. This article describes a follow up of that research, specifically studying work in its relation with depression. Aiming to develop this issue and based on the critical phenomenological method, the interviews of 72 adults with depression (n = 30 in Fortaleza, n = 22 in Santiago, n = 20 in Boston) were re-analyzed, focusing the emergent theme of work. The results show that unemployment, overwork, competitiveness and lack of meaning of work are part of depression. Beyond constitutive specific aspects in the three studied cultures, this research shows how the lived situation in post-modern globalized work contributes to the so called depression epidemic that we live nowadays
