Abstract

This study examine the family dynamics of cancer patients from the disclosure of the cancer diagnosis as well as the role of the family inserted, through the analysis of the affective bonds and styles of interpersonal communication. This is a qualitative study involving four families who had a member in treatment with a cancer diagnosis. Semi -structured interviews and field diary were used to collect data, and we chose the content analysis for the construction of categories. The results point to a reorganization of family dynamics, family communication , social and emotional bonds as well as reactions towards the diagnosis in the family. The analysis involves the psychological and social dimensions indicating that the family also gets sick with the patient. Thus, it becomes necessary that family and patient are helped to better cope with the illness trajectory enabling the reduction of stress caused by it.
