Search the phenomenon of metrosexuality requires new understandings that involve discussions about the concepts of gender, identity and masculinity from the standpoint of a postmodern perspective, since this is a recent phenomenon characteristic of nowadays society. This research aimed to present the self-image and the purpose of the maintenance metrosexuals practices of men from Belém/Pará. An exploratory qualitative approach, with the phenomenological method as a data analysis tool, was used. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee to ensure ethical issues related to the research. Interviews were conducted with 03 men chosen by the snowball sampling with the following inclusion criteria: ages between 20 and 35 years, middle class, who presented practices and/or profiles compatible with metrosexuals characteristics. Based on the analysis of the discursive elements proffered by the interviewees, the study revealed the participants' self-image, their viewpoints about metrosexuality, the goals of their practices, their purpose and how these affects their routines and personal relationships. The results indicate that the historically constructed concept of masculinity still influences the post-modern man. However, the benefits of maintaining the metrosexual profile are more significant than the prejudices suffered, achieving personal satisfaction and social confirmation. Future scientific studies in this area are critical to fostering discussions and broaden understandings of the subject, especially as regards the elements that influence the process of subjectivity and construction of metrosexuals identities.
