Abstract

The study sought to investigate the meaning of collecting. To do so, 15 collectors of the traditional brand "MATCHBOX" were selected, and submitted to semi-structured interviews, after analyzed through the phenomenological perspective of Amedeo Giorgi. The answers allowed us to understand the motivations that made the interviewees to collect, the preconceptions that some of them suffer before society, and at last to formulate parameters to define a set of objects as a collection and to categorize the activity of collecting according to the role that it plays in the collector's life. It was concluded that, overall, collecting is a benign activity to the individuals’ health, contributing to their culture and especially the mental hygiene which provides.
