This study aimed to identify psychological aspects evident in people who suffered orthopedic trauma and to investigate the forms of coping that they used in the pre-surgical period. A field survey was conducted with 10 individuals hospitalized at the orthopedic clinic of a public hospital in western Pará. Data collection was performed using the Scale Mode of Confrontation of Problems (EMEP) and semi-structured interviews, using content analysis and theoretical aspects of Gestalt-Therapy to analyze the data. The results indicated fear, anxiety, as well as aesthetic issues, loss or diminution of corporal functionality and financial losses that were triggering factors of psychic suffering. As a way of coping, the participants used the religiosity / spirituality and the confrontation focused on the problem. In this sense, it is concluded that these people experience intense psychic suffering related to their injuries, fractures, pains and stresses the importance of the more active performance of the professional of Psychology in Orthopedics.
