SERRA, Adriana Patrícia Egg  y  FREITAS, Joanneliese de Lucas. Maternal Mourning After Suicide: Impotence and Helplessness in the Face of (Im)Possibilities. Rev. NUFEN [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.3, pp. 19-37. ISSN 2175-2591.  http://dx.doi.org/10.26823/RevistadoNUFEN.vol12.nº03artigo73.

Two mourning experiences considered to be the most devastating that a human being can suffer are those lived by parents before the loss of a child and those that result from suicide. This research aimed to understand, from a phenomenological perspective, aspects of this unique experience, from a pre-reflection based on scientific literature and in a case analysis. We described the meanings and specificities of this experience and its psychological repercussions through an exploratory qualitative empirical research, through the analysis of an interview using the Giorgi method. The most striking and distinctive characteristics revealed in the analyzed experience were a deep feeling of impotence in the face of the perception of an outcome that was inexorable; the helplessness experienced in the search for help that was insufficient; and the protection found in the support from family and in the religious confrontation after the consummated suicide.

Palabras clave : Maternal Mourning; Suicide; Phenomenology.
