Abstract

VASCONCELOS, Lucila Moura Ramos  and  DUTRA, Elza Maria do Socorro. The Feelings Of Health Professionals About The Death Of Newborns. Rev. NUFEN [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.3, pp. 38-52. ISSN 2175-2591.  http://dx.doi.org/10.26823/RevistadoNUFEN.vol12.nº03artigo74.

The present study aimed to understand how health professionals working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units experience the death of newborns. For this purpose, the Heideggerian phenomenology was chosen as a possibility for understanding the phenomenon. Nine narrative interviews were conducted. The analysis of the narratives was inspired by the hermeneutic circle proposed by Martin Heidegger in the Analytic of Existence. The interpretations showed the professionals reporting feelings of impotence, guilt and sadness. The experience of these feelings leads some professionals to change the way they attend patients' relatives. They also result in the creation of strategies to avoid suffering, distancing themselves from patients close to death. The results point out the need to create a space for professionals to express their emotions, which can contribute to a better quality of life at work and to better care for patients and their families
