Abstract

AZEVEDO, Ana Karina Silva; COSTA, Amanda Melo Queiroz da  and  OLIVEIRA, Olga Maria Hawes Fernandes de. Witnesses of a suicide: a study with merchants in the surroundings of the Newton Navarro bridge in Natal. Rev. NUFEN [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.3, pp. 71-86. Heideggerian-inspired phenomenological research that aims to understand the experience of merchants witnessing suicides that occurred at the Newton Navarro Bridge, located in Natal / RN. Four traders' narratives were used and, after reading, significant nuclei composed of parts of the testimonies and meanings highlighted in the interview were highlighted. Heidegger's notions of being-there, anguish, tuning, impersonality and being-for-death guided the reflections. Five cores of meaning were obtained: the tuning about the sound of suicide; the witness of a suicide: about seeing and looking at the scene; understandings about suicide; the spectacularization of death and suicide on the bridge and; meanings of suicide on the Newton Navarro bridge. We conclude that the occurrence of suicides changed the relationship between traders and the bridge, which starts to evoke death as an existential possibility for them. The study also evoked the need for research with other populations also affected by this reality, such as fishermen and divers.

Keywords : Witness; Suicide; Bridge; Phenomenological- hermeneutic; Heidegger.
