Abstract

FELIX, Lívia Botelho; SANTOS, Maria de Fátima de Souza  and  ALESSIO, Renata Lira dos Santos. The care is double: Motherhood in the context of psychosocial care. Rev. NUFEN [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.3, pp. 154-175. ISSN 2175-2591.  http://dx.doi.org/10.26823/RevistadoNUFEN.vol12.nº03artigo79.

This study intends to look into the experiences and social representations regarding the maternity of children in severe and persistent psychological distress. Fifteen mothers of users of a Child Psychosocial Care Center (CAPSi), located in Recife, Pernambuco, were interviewed. The orally produced narratives were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and submitted to thematic analysis of content. The effects of child psychological distress on family dynamics were highlighted, whilst considerations about the underlying symbolic and psychosocial processes were made. Mothering, a complex experience in itself, is even more challenging in the context of Mental Health, as it is affected by numerous challenges emerging from macro and micro politics, considering access to public policies and confrontation of social stigmas as well as socio-affective and economical vulnerabilities. These conditions, in addition to being obstacles to guarantee children's rights, linked to gender inequalities and fragile social networks, corroborate to experiences of anguish, isolation and burden on these women.
