In this article, we present the experience of an extension course in theater developed at Instituto Federal Baiano - Campus Serrinha. The purpose of the proposal was to provide students with knowledge in theater through practices and reflections on artistic elements and socio-cultural contexts. Based on Augusto Boal's Teatro do Oprimido approach, the workshops were organized in four modules, aimed at (1) introducing the theatrical language, (2) experimenting with interpretation practices, (3) knowledge focused on the performing arts and Brazilian's northeasterndramaturgy and (4) setting up a theatrical show. The weekly meetings consisted of moments of technical preparation, study and debate, theater practice and moments of evaluation of the process. The experience contributed to the students formation of the participants and indicates methodological paths for the elaboration of future proposals for theater workshops in school education contexts.
