ABSTRACT Currently, there is a significant number of graduate students who suffer or become psychically ill and seek psychological and psychiatric help while taking master´s anda doctoral programs. To understand the elements present in this process and assist in the construction of interventions, a qualitative-descriptive and exploratory study was carried out at a Brazilian public university with the objective of investigating the psychological suffering in strictu sensu graduate students considering the relationship of conditions and requirements academic prodution with the use of psychotropic drugs. The results found were presented in two perspectives: work relationships; psychic suffering and use of medication. The use of psychopharmacs is identified as one of the strategies created by students to deal with suffering and illness. The need to expand and strengthen mental health care in universities policies and devices aimed at this group is highlighted.
