This qualitative and descriptive research had the aim to investigate the routine of psychiatric hospitalizations at a general hospital in order to understand the strategies to prevent torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment or against exploration, violence and abuse. Authors used participant observation at an admission unit of a general hospital at the state of SNo Paulo as well as interviews with 10 participants in order to obtain data which was analyzed through thematic analysis. Data showed human conditions, dignity and respect during treatment, but the paternalism was present and to handle crises, physical and mechanical constraints were used, indicating the need for technical and ethical reflections in order to assure safe practices and the incorporation of a care based on autonomy as part of the hospital daily activities
