Abstract

RAMOS, Silvia. Trajectories in drug trafficking: youth and armed violence in Rio's favelas. Trivium [online]. 2011, vol.3, n.2, pp. 41-57. ISSN 2176-4891.

The subjects of this article are the multiples and heterogeneous trajectories of young people involved in drug trafficking and armed groups in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Results of quantitative research conducted with young people of the city are discussed and qualitative research from the favelas are analyzed. The article discusses the recent changes in the city, with the crisis of the drug market and the creation of the Pacification Police Units. The author proposes that it is necessary to understand the pathways of young people in and out of drug trafficking in the light of contemporary theories of youth life trajectories.
