CORDEIRO, Fabíola. Female criminality in Brazil. Trivium [online]. 2017, vol.9, n.1, pp. 1-15. ISSN 2176-4891.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18379/2176-4891.2017v1p.1.

In this chapter I address the social and institutional 'management' of sexuality at Talavera Bruce Penitentiary (Know as TB), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. TB was the first women's prison to be created in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the second in the country. It was founded in 1942. In the 1980's, it drew public attention as cases of torture were reported, and on different occasions inmates threatened to stage a rebellion. At present, it is regularly chosen for interventions by NGOs and religious groups (especially Pentecostal), and boasts an intense social agenda of events. The nacional media portrays TB as a model institution, an exception in the degrading scenario of the country's prisons. This discourse is contested by social movements and NGO representatives who denounce violent practices against the inmates.
