Abstract

MARCOS, Cristina Moreira. The desire to have a child and the woman nowadays. Trivium [online]. 2017, vol.9, n.2, pp. 246-256. ISSN 2176-4891.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18379/2176-4891.2017v2p.246.

"What does a woman want?" asks Freud, and one of his answers is "to be a mother." Nowa-days, this answer is more a question and a worry: what does it mean, to be a mother? My inquiry concerns the different ways of the desire of having a child for a woman today, beyond the possible phallic value of the child, and the suffering associated with this desire. The question concerns what is motherhood, beyond the possible phallic value of the child, when it becomes a stage of suffering, whose expression goes from puerperal depression to infanticide, through all sorts of maternal difficulties, such as psychotic triggers, anguishes, and eating disorders. The article presents some clinical fragments that allow to apprehend the most diverse declinations of the desire to have a child.
