One of the focuses of the Brazilian National Humanization Policy (NHP) is to promote SUS's staff health and wellbeing; literature indicates staff's vulnerability to occupational stress. A quali-quanti study (ethnographic observations and Work Stress Scale - 13 respondents) investigated stress level among staff in a Psychosocial Care Center and their work practices/processes. "Intermediate level of stress" (M=2.5) was diagnosed on the team; 9 out of 23 psychosocial items had averages above 2.5 (highly stressful), the highest being: deficit in professional training (M=3.8); information flow (M=3.2); and institution discrimination/favoritism (M=3.2). Qualitative analysis, through social constructionist epistemology, elucidated psychosocial processes "behind" quantitative results. Worth mentioning: unpreparedness, helplessness, interpersonal conflicts, communication issues and problems on how to deal with "insanity". High stress levels suggest a possible "dehumanization" of working processes or at work, and its relation with management.
