The Pestalozzi Institute was founded in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in 1935 so as to be a school for children with intellectual disabilities. The present study aimed to investigate how the care of handicapped children was carried out by this institution during the 1940s. Using as a reference the historiography of psychology, the records of 33 children who were assisted at the Institute during the above-mentioned period were analyzed. The documents showed that the children went through medical, psychological and educational evaluations. The psychological assessment included the application of intelligence tests and below average IQs were often detected. The records also showed the treatment recommendations that were given to patients as well as their educational development. It is remarkable that the Pestalozzi Institute played an important role in the education of children with disabilities in a historical period in which they were often excluded from the public education system.

Palabras clave : Pestalozzi Institute; intellectual disability; exceptional children; history of Psychology.
