This paper aimed to discuss the importance of the existing Child and Youth Guidance Clinics in the city of Rio de Janeiro from the 1940s to the 1960s; they were: a) COJ/DNCr; b) COI/SNDM; c) COI/IPUB. Through document analysis and interviews, we observed the importance of the Guidance Clinics in the process of establishing Psychology as an independent science field in Brazil based on their articulation with the preventive health ideals influenced by the hygienist movement. Finally, we highlight the protagonism of the female performance in this period of genesis of the profession of psychologist in Brazil.
