This study aimed to understand the implications of care giving activities on the life of caregivers looking after family members in psychological distress. By a qualitative approach, the research was performed with six caregivers of both genders; the data were collected through semi-structured interview and the analysis based on the theoretical principles of the Content Analysis by Laurence Bardin. Aiming for similarities in experience, the reports were grouped into two analytical themes: the family member becoming the caregiver and the caregivers' health. It can be noticed that the mental illness process affects the whole family system, but the main caregiver is the one who suffers the most from the impacts of these changes and, in most cases, has nobody to share the suffering with.
