The text narrates the history of clinical psychology in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing its singular and local characteristics. The purpose of the text is to serve as a device for different ways of thinking about what Clinical Psychology can be and the role of the clinical psychologist, considering its implications and effects for the subjects and society. It first discusses the Clinical Psychology constitution in institutions of Rio de Janeiro, in the 1940s to 1960s. It then points out the effects of the profession and courses regulation in this field. Finally, it points to new clinical versions that have emerged since the 1980s, such as Gestalt-therapy, cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalysis, this almost always hegemonic, as well as points out the work of psychologists in SUS.
