Abstract

GUIMARAES, Luiza de Moura  and  CARMO, João dos Santos. Effective procedures in toilet training for individuals with autism: contributions by Azrin and colleagues. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.2, pp. 69-82. ISSN 2177-093X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v10i2.590.

Toilet training is an important milestone in child development, and a challenge when it comes to teaching individuals with special needs and autism. The use of teaching strategies with research proven effectiveness is fundamental to minimize the consequences due to the difficulties presented by these individuals. This paper aims to present a review of studies published by Azin and colleagues, and show their influence in later papers about toilet training in individuals with autism. We found 8 articles and their results indicated two relevant procedures that are useful with this population: Rapid Toilet Training for daytime incontinence, and the Dry Bed Training for night time incontinence. Many experiments were conducted, extending and adapting the protocols of Azrin and Foxx (1971) and Azrin, Sneed and Foxx (1973), which are the most cited protocols in the area until now.

Keywords : toilet training; autism; special education.
