This work consists of an integrative literature review based on the analysis of data from scientific articles that address chronic diseases, not including the transmitted ones, in the family context, from the perspective of social representations, focusing on works whose participants were patients or caregivers/family members. The Results and Considerations sections of articles published between the years 2007 to 2017 in the databases PEPSIC, LILACS, and SciELO were analyzed, resulting in a sample of 18 articles. The articles were characterized and textual data were submitted to Descending Hierarchical Classification and Similitude Analysis using the IraMuTeQ software. The contents were organized into classes called: Illness as a Social Process; Psycho-Emotional Experience; Context of Health Information and Education; Limitations Imposed by the Disease and Social Support; and Necessary Care Routines. Such classes are organized in meaning networks centered on the element Care, indicating the straight relationship of this phenomenon with the adjustment processes necessary to the family system.
