Resumen

INTRODUCTION: military personnel are exposed to occupatonal hazards at work. METHOD: Epidemiological and descriptive cross-sectonal study conducted with 4,392 policemen and firefighters. The prevalence, incidence and association of socio-occupatonal variables with the reasons for leaving work, according to the Internatonal Statstical Classificaton of Diseases and Related Health Problems, were evaluated. RESULTS: The most prevalent injuries were injuries, poisonings and some other consequences of external causes (29.0%);diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tssue (23.4%). There was an increase of 28.1% in new cases of mental and behavioral disorders and 23.4% in diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tssue. The socio-occupatonal variables had a relatonship with the main reasons to leaving the work found in the sample (p <0.05). CONCLUSION: Military policemen and male military firefighter performing operatonal tasks presented high prevalence and incidence of sick-leave.
