INTRODUCTION: Premature birth and hospitalizaton of a baby are dificult experiences for everyone involved. This qualitative study aimed to understand the experience of fathers of babies born prematurely and hospitalized in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. METHOD: The convenience sample included three men whose babies were between fve and six months old and were hospitalized in the NICU of a public hospital in Rio Grande do Sul. A sociodemographic questionnaire and a semistructured interview were applied and analyzed based on thematc Content Analysis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS: Parents' sufering regarding premature birth and hospitalizaton of the baby, challenges of the first visit and dificultes in resuming their work routnes were identifed. The support received by fathers from their family and friends was highlighted. CONCLUSION: It's necessary to qualify interventons aimed at parents in the NICU, strengthening the experience of fatherhood and father-baby bond.
