The data were collected through interviews that were transcribed, submited to Content Analysis and problematzed by the Heideggerian Phenomenology. Emerging empirical categories denoted family influence, the impact of using licit and illicit drugs, and the recogniton of disease as marking traits of the health-disease process. It was concluded that although the health-disease process is a complex phenomenon in a specific vulnerable group, it was possible to explore significant elements that carry within themselves the concreteness of being-there in their experiences. For the interviewees, the health-disease process reflect their ways of life while being-there, being-with, being-with-the-world, as well as influenced by family issues and recogniton of chemical dependence as a disease causing sufering psychic.
