Heart surgery has made it possible to strengthen the link between Psychology and Cardiology, since there is an important interaction between physical and psychological aspects and heart patients. The research aimed to evaluate the occurrence of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients in pre-surgery heart in a university hospital. It is a field study, quantitative and cross-sectional, with a sample of 32 patients in preoperative cardiac. Two instruments were applied: a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The data were analyzed using R version 3.5.1 software and discussed based on literature studies. A higher frequency of anxiety symptoms than depression symptoms was noted, with a statistically significant association between anxiety symptoms and female gender. The researches that seek to evaluate the psychological aspects in this period are shown to be important in order to provide means of assistance to the medical and multidisciplinary team in the care of cardiac patients.
