INTRODUCTION: Violence against women is recognized as a human rights and public health issue, and health services are fundamental to identify and host cases. This article describes the perceptions of health professionals about violence against women. METHOD: Interviews were carried out with 26 professionals working in different services in a region of the hinterland of Pernambuco, analyzed by the content analysis technique. RESULTS: Three axes of analysis were highlighted: understanding of violence against women; knowledge of the network and legislation; and assistance to women in situations of violence. DISCUSSION: It was verified that professionals have difficulty in recognizing types of violence, present a prejudiced vision in relation to women, and are unaware of the network and pertinent legislations. CONCLUSIONS: It is fundamental that professionals have information about violence, network of services and laws, as well as recognize themselves as important actors in identifying and facing violence.
