Abstract

PEREIRA, Veronica Aparecida; MATHIAS, Betania Moura  and  MOREIRA, Amanda Marques. Prematurity in discussion: descriptive and correlational study. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.1, pp. 147-155. ISSN 2177-093X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v14i1.1489.

This study aims to: a) describe and correlate the occurrences of premature births in a university hospital in Mato Grosso do Sul, over a period of one year; and b) describe the feelings reported by the mothers during hospitalization. One thousand, five hundred thirty two mothers were visited, 283 of whom had a premature birth. The mothers of preterm babies hospitalized after delivery were invited to answer a questionnaire about the feelings generated by the hospitalization and 25 accepted. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation. The prevalence of prematurity was 18.5%, which is higher than that indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The higher maternal age was correlated with a higher occurrence of prematurity and cesarean section. Most participants reported negative feelings before and during hospitalization, however, they have positive expectations after discharge.

Keywords : maternal and child health; Public Health Policies; prematurity.
