Abstract

MARTINS, Alberto Mesaque; ROCHA, Maria Isabel Antunes; AUGUSTO, Rosely Carlos  and  LEE, Henrique de Oliveira. The training in Psychology and perception of the rural environment: a necessary debate. Psicol. Ensino & Form. [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.1, pp. 83-98. ISSN 2177-2061.

Brazilian media has lately brought light on the rural environment, arising, thus, public opinion towards this geographical space and the people who inhabit it. The relevance of this subject is reflected on a growing number of researches concerning the countryside population. Guided by a qualitative methodological framework, this research tries to analyze the social perception of undergraduate Psychology students about the "rural environment" and their inhabitants. The data displays an ambiguous perception of the Brazilian countryside: sometimes seen as a bucolic and idyllic place, but sometimes represented as a place of extreme poverty inhabited by illiterate and ignorant people. The role of the Psychology academic formation should be considered in the development of approaches that contribute to the development of socially engaged professionals and to the professional support praxis within the multiple contexts of Psychology work demanded by our country.

Keywords : Graduation of Psychologists; Social Perception; Society; Rural environment.
