Abstract

GUERREIRO-CASANOVA, Daniela  and  POLYDORO, Soely. Integration to higher education: relations during freshmen year. Psicol. Ensino & Form. [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.2, pp. 85-96. ISSN 2177-2061.

The activities and programs offered by colleges and universities should consider that, at the beginning of the process of higher education, freshmen students find themselves facing several challenges. This research aims at analyzing the integration of freshman students into higher education and its changes during the first year. Participants were 189 freshmen from different courses of a private higher education institution. Data was collected through the Academic Experience Questionnaire (Questionário de Vivências Acadêmicas), on March and October 2006. As a result it was verified a significant decrease in the perception of integration to higher education between the first and the second data collected (z = - 2,985; p = 0,003). From 128 valid responses, 79 demonstrated negative relation (medium rank = 67,15) in the second phase and 48 showed positive relation (medium rank = 58,82). The analyses of the results allowed for the discussion about the educational and institutional action plans in order to improve the integration to higher education.
