Abstract

KRUG, Jefferson Silva; BASTIANELLO, Micheline Roat; PORT, Alexandre Kury  and  HUTZ, Claudio Simon. Psychology students' perceptions of their mastery of psychological theories and the psychologist's areas of practice and activities. Psicol. Ensino & Form. [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.1, pp. 41-59. ISSN 2177-2061.

The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of first and last year undergraduate psychology students of their mastery of psychological theories and the areas of practice and professional activities of the psychologist. The study used a questionnaire to poll 46 first year students and 42 final year students. Descriptive analyses, analyses of the differences between means and measures of effect sizes were made. Final year students showed enhanced perception of their mastery of all the variables analyzed. A significant statistical difference was found between the groups' means related to the mastery of eight theories, seven areas of practice and fifteen activities of a professional psychologist. The main features and implications of the Psychology course curriculum were discussed and it was suggested that attention be paid to those variables that showed a low mean among the graduating students, especially those related to psychodynamic theories and areas of professional practice such as school psychology and work psychology.
