Abstract

This article presents a reflection on certain characteristics of contemporary university teaching, such as academic "productivism", that have impacted the work of academic teaching staffs and led to widespread uneasiness. Based on historical and dialectical materialism, we seek to show how understanding teaching in the context of human labor in general, and being aware of the historical and political transformations of university education and the contradictions of the capitalist mode of production may contribute towards a redefinition of the social functions of research and teaching in the university.
