Resumo

The article discusses the results of research into the contributions made by psychology teaching in courses offered by state technical schools in São Paulo. With historical, dialectical materialism as its theoretical and methodological references, the research was conducted in a state technical school and involved: live observation of classes in Organizational Psychology and Social Psychology; documental analysis; informal conversations and interviews with the teacher of those study subjects. The discussion suggests that while the teaching of Psychology at this school in some moments involved potentially emancipating processes, in great measure it contributed to potentially alienating processes. The subordination of professional teaching to the demands of market ideology, to the working conditions of teaching in state technical schools and the specificities of psychology as a field of knowledge are analyzed as being conditioning factors for the contributions of psychology teaching. In conclusion, the article identifies the challenges to be faced in order that the teaching of psychology may contribute towards a more humane qualification.
