Abstract

ALMEIDA, Patrícia Albieri de; TARTUCE, Gisela Lobo B. P.  and  NUNES, Marina Muniz Rossa. For what reasons is teaching an unattractive career to high school students?. Psicol. Ensino & Form. [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.2, pp. 103-121. ISSN 2177-2061.

This survey aimed to investigate the attractiveness of the teaching profession in Brazil from the perspective of graduating high school students. The study was conducted in eight cities, and involved 18 schools. The data analyzed came from two sources: questionnaires and discussion groups. 1501 questionnaires were given to high school senior students, and discussion groups of 10 participants were organized at each school. In general, a career in teaching was repeatedly rejected by the subjects surveyed. They identified that increasing opportunities in the job market resulted in teaching becoming a less attractive career, with fragile financial stability and decreasing social recognition. The students' justifications include the absence of personal identification, social and financial considerations, personal experiences with education, and family influence.
