Abstract

BORLOTI, Elizeu; CALIXTO, Fernanda Castanho  and  HAYDU, Verônica Bender. Behavioral analysis of a self-help discourse. Perspectivas [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.2, pp. 92-105. ISSN 2177-3548.

Behavioral Analysis of Discourse (BAD) specifies antecedent and consequent events of argument sentences (A-Ss) uttered by speakers, identifying possible variables that control and maintain the combination of these sentences (discourse). In texts, the variables that control the reader are highlighted among those variables. This study applies the BAD in analyzing the specific variables that could be established and maintained the self-help discourse in The Secret. The A-Ss were selected for BAD, which consisted in discriminating and interpreting occurrences of them, their antecedents and consequences events, reinterpreting them to find examples that confirm the regularity of certain functions and functionally self-describing behavior of interpreting them. It was concluded that The Secret self-help discourse is marked by quantifiers, relational and descriptive autoclitics that together with predication, seem to work so that the property of certainty ensures the popularity of the book. These autoclitics controls appear to be the functional brand of self-help discourses in general. The controls of relational autoclitics, for example, are the properties of relations between primary operants of the discourse in The Secret (antecedents) and the increased likelihood of the its reader to behave according to the way of those relations are described by its writer (the consequences).
