Abstract

VANDENBERGHE, Luc. The interpretation of dreams revisited. Perspectivas [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.2, pp. 70-77. ISSN 2177-3548.

The present article offers a reflection, based on a selection of Brazilian authors, concerning the practice of dream analysis aiming to offer an outline of its contributions to behavior therapy. Dream content reflects the effects of contingencies that shaped the client's repertoires. Dream reports, however, are under the control of the relationship with the therapist. The article argues that dream analysis can contribute in three ways to treatment. First, it can bring problems or needs to light that have not yet received attention in treatment. Second, comparing the dream content, and/or the way it is reported to other information about the client can help identify relevant contingencies that need to be included in the case formulation. Third, dream analysis can bring to the berth material for in-vivo work in session, more specifically, the difficulties evoked by dream material and the challenges that emerge in the relationship with the therapist while discussing dreams.
