Abstract

SILVEIRA, Marcelo Vitor; SANTOS, Alceu Regaço dos  and  ROSE, Julio Cesar de. Emergence of equivalence relations following simultaneous simple discrimination training with compound stimuli. Perspectivas [online]. 2016, vol.7, n.2, pp. 303-318. ISSN 2177-3548.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18761/pac.2016.025.

Previous researches had confirmed the emergence of equivalence relations out from conditional discriminations trained with the matching-to-sample (MTS) procedure. Alternatively, equivalence classes are been successfully demonstrated following the establishment of conditional discriminations among the units of compound stimuli, presented on successive simple discrimination training. The simultaneous discrimination training protocol with compound stimuli are not been explored, in despite of some evidences that this procedure can generate conditional discriminations among elements of compound stimuli and equivalence relations. This research aimed at testing for the emergence of equivalence relations following simultaneous simple discrimination training with compound stimuli. Thus, five undergraduates were trained to discriminate "correct" from "incorrect" compound stimuli, presented in a simultaneous discrimination task. Three participants attained criterion for AB and AC training and were tested for the emergence of AC and CA relations. Tests were conducted on a MTS format, in which the elements of the compound stimuli were isolated and presented as sample and as comparisons stimuli. Two participants attained 90% correct responses criterion on the test phase and one participant were slightly below criterion. Performances by two participants fully confirmed the prediction that equivalence relations would be developed by this procedure, which confirms the effectiveness of procedures alternative to the MTS for the empirical survey of the establishment of equivalence classes.
